Summer with the Psalms
July 27 & July 28
Psalm 57 & 58
“Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious and merciful to me, For my soul finds shelter and safety in You, And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge and be confidently secure Until destruction passes by. I will cry to God Most High, Who accomplishes all things on my behalf [for He completes my purpose in His plan]. He will send from heaven and save me; He calls to account him who tramples me down. Selah. God will send out His lovingkindness and His truth. ¶My life is among lions; I must lie among those who breathe out fire— The sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword. Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory and majesty be over all the earth. They set a net for my steps; My very life was bowed down. They dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah. ¶My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast and confident! I will sing, yes, I will sing praises [to You]! Awake, my glory! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the people; I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your faithfulness and lovingkindness are great, reaching to the heavens, And Your truth to the clouds. Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory and majesty be over all the earth.”
Psalms 57:1-11 AMP
“Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods (heavenly beings)? Do you judge fairly, O sons of men? [Ps 82:1, 2] No, in your heart you devise wrongdoing; On earth you deal out the violence of your hands. The wicked are estranged from the womb; These go astray from birth, speaking lies [even twisted partial truths]. Their poison is like the venom of a serpent; They are like the deaf horned viper that stops up its ear, So that it does not listen to the voice of charmers, Or of the skillful enchanter casting [cunning] spells. ¶O God, break their teeth in their mouth; Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord. Let them flow away like water that runs off; When he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts. Let them be as a snail which melts away (secretes slime) as it goes along, Like the miscarriage of a woman which never sees the sun. Before your cooking pots can feel the fire of thorns [burning under them as fuel], He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning ones alike. ¶The [unyieldingly] righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance [of God]; He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. Men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely there is a God who judges on the earth.””
Psalms 58:1-11 AMP
Prayer & Reflection
What does it truly mean to humble oneself
under the mighty hand of God? The Amplified translation helps us understand by placing God first “Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory and majesty be over all the earth.”
Psalms 57:5 AMP
This can be sometimes seen as surrender, submission and complete removal of self in the place of God, but that may be a more literal interpretation. Instead in the Hebrew “humility” is translated into English can be interpreted in this context as “anav” which means to lower oneself in the spiritual act of following Gods will, personifying grace and becoming meek to the circumstances which greet oneself in an internal and external sense.
The “anav” humility helps us to personify the teaching of Jesus sermon on the mount and becoming “Poor in Spirit”. Not poor in finances, health or rank or authority, but poor to uplift those whom we serve and to place Christ before ourselves.
Practically speaking this can be the process of 1 Peter 2:9 and the concept of a Baptismal Ecclesiology which means we are all under the Cross, the Resurrection and Life and Death of Jesus Christ. That we are all called to surrender our lives to Christ, to serve for his Glory and his name sake.
We are called to not judge others, but to follow Christ and let God be God. “Men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely there is a God who judges on the earth.””
Psalms 58:11 AMP
If we understand as Paul teaches in his letters to the Churches of his day that he want to present us as pure and unadulterated to love Christ first and foremost we can see that instead of us becoming weak, we become strong in the Lord and Christ’s perfect strength can overcome and accomplish all things in our life.
Today let us surrender again ourselves to the Will of God and to present ourselves as a living sacrifice to Christ Jesus our Lord. Let us not be in the habit of some and continue to meet together to pray, read the Bible and petition heaven for Heaven to come on Earth and Gods will to be done in Jesus name. Amen
Let us Pray…
Father thank you giving us love, hope and grace to fight the good fight. Release us today from bondage again and help us not be subject to sin, but instead to fix our eyes on Jesus and follow him in Jesus name. Amen
“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”
