Summer with the Psalms

Saturday 3rd August Psalm 63

“O God, You are my God; with deepest longing I will seek You; My soul [my life, my very self] thirsts for You, my flesh longs and sighs for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have gazed upon You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory. [Ps 42:1, 2] Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You. So will I bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul [my life, my very self] is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, And my mouth offers praises [to You] with joyful lips. ¶When I remember You on my bed, I meditate and thoughtfully focus on You in the night watches, For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings [where I am always protected] I sing for joy. My soul [my life, my very self] clings to You; Your right hand upholds me. ¶But those who seek my life to destroy it Will [be destroyed and] go into the depths of the earth [into the underworld]. They will be given over to the power of the sword; They will be a prey for foxes. But the king will rejoice in God; Everyone who swears by Him [honoring the true God, acknowledging His authority and majesty] will glory, For the mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.”

Psalm Prayer & Reflection

The concept and perception of God being absent from us is not inconceivable. In John 16:7 Jesus tells us “I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

Here Jesus informs us of his earthly departure, but this does not mean that he will be completely absent from us. Instead he tells us that the Helper will come. The Holy Spirit is that help. The third part of the Trinity. As we have been known to be praying for coverage in our lives we do so to the Holy Spirit of sometimes best described as the Paraclete. The Holy Spirit is always with us, alive in us and can help us through our days, lives and our darkest or toughest times. One of the oldest prayers in the Church is the call for the presence of the Holy Spirit; we pray “Come Holy Spirit.” This can be in a time of private intimacy with God or during corporate Worship

These two different settings are important to understand when we pray alone we are going into our room, closing the door and praying to our heavenly Father. We call upon the Holy Spirit to come so that we maybe focused, listening and concentrating all our attention on him. Our heavenly Father. Through the Holy Spirit, through Jesus interceding on our behalf and our submission and surrender we enter dialogue with our heavenly Father. His still, small quiet voice can only be heard when are in full submission and surrender with the whole Trinitarian God.

Prayer & Reflection

Father God thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ to testify to your love for us and that his death and resurrection mean we now have access to you through the power of the Holy Spirit. Please council, lead and direct us in all we do and be with us now and always in Jesus name. Amen

“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”
