Free & Fit - Summer with the Psalms - Thursday July 4th Psalm 34
Summer with the Psalms
Thursday July 4th Psalm 34
“I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart. Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together. I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles. For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Fear the Lord, you his godly people, for those who fear him will have all they need. Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing. Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord. Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth. The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time. For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken! Calamity will surely destroy the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished. But the Lord will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.”
Psalms 34:1-22 NLT
Reflection:
Have you ever been to a food tasting sample event? Where you can taste all the food before you buy it and often don’t end up buying hardly anything? Often in our Western civilized society we are offered many things to test our five senses, to tempt us and to ultimately get us to to yield to buying, purchasing or supporting a specific brand, product or service. Although these selections are not bad intrinsically in themselves, if we continuously yield to them, if we form patterns of unhealthy buying behaviors and if we get consumed by such earthly materials it can become a more serious issues.
The Psalmist for today recognizes their need to focus their ultimate attention on God and to build a relationship which includes all our attention, focus and energy on God. The one true living God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Psalmist proclaims “O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good!” Instead of consuming physical food or drink the Psalmist is referencing our spiritual food. To pray is to speak to God, to Worship is to is to sing to God, to read Scripture we can hear from God and to proclaim Gods promises of old through Witness and Testimony we can petition to heaven for help with our daily lives and in Community in Fellowship at Church we can Taste and See God at Work in all of our lives in Jesus name!
As Christians we have the fortunate privilege of being able to Worship God in all we do, their is no restriction or requirement for us to do so, but in all we do we can give God thanks and Praise. The Psalmist is overjoyed to share “How blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who takes refuge in Him.” We can all turn to God in the small things, in the big things and in the mundane things. Through prayer we can be confident of what comes next: eternal life. In heaven we get to permanently Taste and See that the Lord is good! In Jesus name. Amen
Let us Pray…
Father we thank you for a new day, to be assured of your mercies which are new every morning and to proclaim your name everyday. We love you, we Praise you and we seek you in all we do in Jesus name. Amen
“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”
