Free & Fit - Summer with the Psalms - Wednesday September 11th 2024 Psalm 101

Summer with the Psalms

Wednesday September 11th 2024 Psalm 101

Opening Prayer

Father God as we remember those who lost their lives on September 11th in New York City in 2001 and here in Charlotte in 1974 on a flight from Charleston we are reminded to pray, to seek your face and ask for your protection over everyone we know and love. Today we pray for the families and loved ones who lost lives on these sensitive anniversaries, difficult days and for the pain of their absence in our lives. Be with us today, comfort us with the blessed assurance of your love and hope for all humanity in Jesus Christ. Amen

Opening Verse:

“I will sing of [steadfast] lovingkindness and justice; To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭101‬:‭1‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Full Psalm:

Reflections: When you break through obstacles, challenges and difficulties we sometimes need comforting, to reconcile the wrongs and ultimately to be consoled through our grief, pain and hurt. How do we seek to be console? Do you find yourself ever seeking to console the inconsolable or perhaps sometimes yourself you are inconsolable in response to such moments? Perhaps today on September 11, it is one of those moment where we all wish that those who still mourn lost loved ones could be consoled and comforted today by God.

I can certainly confess to be in some way seeking to console an irreconcilable difference  in this world, whether it be due to insufficient money, idols or jobs. Perhaps it’s different for others. Perhaps it’s popularity, power or responsibility. We are all suffer from feeling insecure, questioning our worth and identity and perhaps seeking to console.

However, God knows us, loves us and calls us his. We are called to be higher than this service of slavery to things we are not merely slaves to Christ; we are chosen, favoured, loved and graced for whats next, ultimately we are not called to o  slavery not of sin or death, but to a service of Christ.

Peter helps us with this through reconcilliation, over coming injustice and pursuing Gods will for our lives.

“For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.”

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:19-21‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

During the second Century AD the absence of Christ, since his resurrection, ascension and revelation of the Holy Spirit left the early Church seeking his immediate return. Yet, here we are some 2,000 years later awaiting Christ’s return. In the second century many Saints could be mentioned in today’s devotional, but I wanted to speak about just one today whom I hope can encourage us in our faith today; Irenaus.

According to Henry Chadwick, Irenaeus was the first Christian writer and theologian to list all four Gospels as authoritative for the church. He said that through them “the tradition of the apostles, manifest in the whole world, is present in every church to be perceived by all who wish to see the truth.” This helps us all to see plainly that the Gospels are Truth. That Gods word is Truth. That Jesus is the Way, The Truth and the Life! In Jesus name. Amen

Let us Pray…

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

In Jesus Precious name. Amen.

“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”

‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:26‬ ‭NLT‬‬
